We use the following terms for guiding how we use information from sources:
On the record:
The information you provide can be used with no caveats, quoting you, the source, by name. Unless you specify otherwise, we will treat the information you provide as on the record. Any information gathered from public venues will be treated as on the record.
Off the record:
The information you provide is for context only and cannot be used for publication.
Background:
The information you provide can be published but only under conditions negotiated with you, the source. Generally, you would specify that information you provide is for “background” if you do not want your name published but would let us use a description of your position (e.g. yearly meeting staff member, pastor, board member, etc.).
Deep background:
The information you provide can be used but without attribution. Generally, you would specify that information you provide is for “deep background” if you do not want to be identified in any way, even on condition of anonymity.
Finally,
In general, information that is provided in any category other than on the record can be pursued with other sources to be placed on the record.
If you supply information via our contact widget, please specify how that information should be treated.
